We’re farmers at heart.
Owned and operated by members of the Underhill Family, Can-Am Pepper Company is the culmination of 4 generations of farmers.
In the early 1920s Elgin Underhill began farming a small section of Southwestern Ontario’s rich, fertile soil. Max continued in his father’s footsteps adding to the acreage as well as a farm supply store. This would prove to be a prudent step as the farm supply division rapidly grew to a chain of outlets. Although ownership eventually moved out of the Underhill family, the chain still proudly carries Max Underhill’s name. Randy expanded the farming operation to include corn, soybeans, tobacco and grains. His three sons, Greg, Chad and Jammie continued expanding with vegetables and a transportation company.
Seeing the need for a year round supply of processing vegetables, Jammie and Chad created Can-Am Pepper Company in 2010 to fill that need. With a grower base of 4,000 acres in Ontario alone, Can-Am was able to supply processing companies with vegetables from August to October. Expanding the grower base into the Southern US allowed Can-Am to supply the industry for the remainder of the year. While the company began with only peppers, Jammie and Chad have added summer and winter squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, pineapple, limes, beans and watermelon to the roster.
Throughout the family farming history feeding the world in a sustainable and socially responsible way has been a guiding philosophy. Good agricultural practices along with strict adherence to food safety guidelines inform all of Jammie and Chad’s decisions. This outlook guarantees a relationship based on trust between grower, customer and consumer.
